Vintage Radio Advertising

Black and White Historical Image of Man with Radio
  • Introduction

This project explores the significance and impact of the first radio commercials, which marked a transformative moment in advertising history. As advertising transitioned from print to media, radio advertisers adopted new techniques such as entertainment-based scenarios and jingles/music-based commercials to increase audience engagement, which was a prominent shift from the marketing methods and perspectives used before the emergence of this type of technology. While current radio advertising isn’t as widely discussed and has since been eclipsed by television and digital advertising, these early approaches in radio laid the foundation for the modern media advertising we see today.

This project also looks at the commercialization of radio and its advertising methods by examining historical examples of 8 different radio commercials from 7 different brands from the 1920s-1950s. This project also includes technical analyses of some of these audios as support for the overarching narrative and should be used as an educational resource
